Weekly News…..8/1/10

Great Job In Class Last Week!

Wow!  We had great classes last week and you were a huge part of it.  While we had many students taking end of the summer vacations, we still had many students on the mat, sweating, smiling, and learning great martial arts!  Super Job to all students in class last week.  We have our regular class schedule all week this week!  Train, Train, Train!

It’s Back To School Time! Three Points To Consider!

Well it’s that time again! The Back to School season is upon us. As parents, I’m sure some of you are always surprised at how excited my children are to return to school. Sure they lament the end of late nights and waking up at noon, but they’ve missed their friends and teachers a lot. I think if our kids were honest they would tell you that summer time is a little boring. Their lives are more active and vibrant while they are engaged in school.

The transition from the summer mentality to the school year mentality is a difficult one. Every year we worry about the new and unknown challenges that await us when school starts. So much change. New Classes, New Teachers, sometimes there’s even a new school with new start and end times. It would be easy to throw your hands up and say “that’s it!” that’s all I can take.

Sometimes parents will come to us and ask what we think about taking time off from TaeKwonDo training in order to focus on these early days of the school year. Our response to them is not surprising. DON’T DO IT!

Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Studies at University of Florida have proven that TaeKwonDo lessons have a positive impact on academic studies. They offer the student stress relief, practice in concentration, focus, attention to detail, and follow through (my personal favorite). Here are some tips to making this school year the best possible…..

1. During the first few weeks of school try to attend one weekday lesson and one weekend lesson. This will allow you to train on the mat and still free vast amounts of time for the new demands on your mind and body.

2. Inform your academic teachers that you are pursuing TaeKwonDo training and that you are very serious about it. Ask her to participate in our Partners in Learning program. If your teacher would like, your Instructor would be more than happy to come talk to the class, sharing ideas for better mental focus as well as techniques for staying calm under pressure during exam times etc.

3. Adjust your sleep and eating early to ensure success. We all tend to let our guard down a little during the summer. Just like a fighter who keeps his guard down too long, if we wait too long to develop new habits we will sure pay the price.

Your Tiger Rock Martial Arts instructors would be more than happy to assist in any way possible. As always we don’t just want to be your child’s martial arts instructor, we really are success coaches. If you have feel that your child is in need of a one on one meeting with an instructor to discuss motivation, behavior, or performance at school, please do not hesitate to ask.
